Breckenridge accounting manager Laura Kennedy will begin serving as director of finance for the town of Silverthorne next month. On Thursday, the town announced Donna Braun, the town’s longtime finance director of 22 years, will retire.

“Donna’s contribution to the success the town of Silverthorne has experienced during her time here can’t be overstated,” town manager Ryan Hyland said in a statement. “Everyone (who) has been on staff or town council during her time here can attest to what an outstanding steward of public funds she has been.”

Kennedy’s first day with the town is set for May 10, jumping in during the thick of budget season. As director of finance, she will work with the clerk’s office and present budget reports to council.

“I’ll be the person, the face council is seeing to represent the economy and finance rather than being behind the scenes like I am now,” she said. “I love the whole culture and arts initiative that the town of Silverthorne is working on. The groundbreaking for Lake Dillon Theatre just happened. There are a bunch of financial aspects I’ll have to get into right away.”

Kennedy has worked with the town of Breckenridge’s finance department for six years. She and her husband moved to Summit County from Michigan in 1999. In total, she has more than 20 years of experience in management level accounting positions, in addition to a master’s of business administration from the University of Michigan.

“It’s been a great six years with Breck. I’ve learned so much and have had so many opportunities here,” she said. “I think the town of Silverthorne is just making some exciting changes, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

Silverthorne hired recruiting firm Peckham & McKenney to oversee a nationwide recruitment process, with a total of 52 individual applications. Kennedy was ultimately selected from a group of three finalists after interviewing with a Town Management Interview Panel, a Finance Department Interview Panel and a group reception held for all of the candidates, during which they met members of the town council and town staff.

“We are very excited to have Laura joining the Silverthorne team. She has the perfect mix of municipal finance and management experience, coupled with a leadership style that will be a great fit with our organization,” Hyland added. “We will hit the ground running as we enter into our two-year budget process this summer, and we are pleased to have her on board to lead that effort.”
