David Frieder has been honored as Summit County Mountain Mentor’s Mentor of the Month for September, according to the community-based mentorship program that matches volunteers with children ages 8 to 16.

The program aims to positively influence Summit County’s youth to lead healthy lifestyles through a consistent, one-on-one relationship with an adult. Research shows this kind of connection helps young people overcome many of life’s challenges, as well as learn skills that prove valuable in the child’s development.

The program paired Frieder with a boy named Ronald. Since joining the mentors, Frieder has come to greatly enjoy developing an ongoing relationship with his mentee and being able to watch Ronald grow.

Frieder’s favorite activity with Ronald so far has been a skiing trip the two went on together. He said they had a fantastic time, and it would appear Ronald couldn’t agree more.

“I like that we get to have a lot of fun together,” Ronald said.

Many children in the county apply for a mentor but have to wait several months before being matched. For anyone who’s considering becoming a mentor, Frieder borrowed a well-known line from the Nike brand: “‘Just Do It,’” he said. “It is really rewarding and fun.”
