Today’s top five things to do in Summit County

Peaches are in full production now, with freestone varieties now available for the people who like to can them (freestone describes the way the pit, or stone, slips easily from the flesh of the fruit). In the past, peaches traveled by barge along the Colorado River and railways and even stagecoach, wrapped individually in wooden crates and shipped in freight cars packed with ice. Now, the interstate is the main means of transportation, with Chris Brower, of Uncle John’s Farm Stand, heading west two or three times a week to stock up. Peaches should be available by the box or individually for quite a few weeks still. And finally, the field-grown tomatoes seem to be cooperating and offering themselves up. The height of the season is upon us.
