Wildfire education, prevention and safety meeting at the Heeney Firehouse on July 15

Fire meeting in Heeney

The Forest Health Task Force is teaming up with the Friends of the Lower Blue River to put on a special wildfire education, prevention and safety meeting at the Heeney Firehouse.

Sam Kirk, president of the Friends of the Lower Blue River organization, said the meeting’s location will make it easier for people living in the northern parts of Summit County and in Grand County to attend.

“Our commitment is to educate the residents of the Lower Blue to be prepared for the real threat of a wildfire,” Kirk said.

The meeting will include experts from the Kremmling Fire Protection District, Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue, the Colorado State University County Extension program and Summit County’s emergency management director.

Kirk said the meeting will have a rural emphasis. As manager of the Lower Blue’s livestock evacuation preparedness program, he plans to educate residents about how to protect large animals, such as horses and cattle, in the event of a wildfire.

“This meeting will help to prepare people so they know what to do when there is a wildfire — not only for themselves but also for their livestock,” he said.

The fire safety meeting will be held Monday, July 15, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Lower Blue Community Center at the Heeney Firehouse on Heeney Road.
