Locals award scholarships

SUMMIT COUNTY – Preparing for college can be exciting for high school seniors, but the prospect of paying for it can be daunting – without a scholarship to help with the bills.The annual Local Scholarship Presentation is Summit High School’s version of the Oscars, said High School principal Frank Mencin.About 100 people gathered in the high school auditorium Monday night as about $212,000 in scholarships was awarded to 68 college-bound seniors, said high school counselor Stephanie Derringer.Local businesses, nonprofits and memorials provided the scholarships to students who excelled in academics and sports, participated in extra-curricular activities and clubs, and volunteered their time for community service.Scholarship sponsors and recipients are Business Education Alliance – Kendra Huenneke, Isabel Warpecha;
