Lone Star seized for back taxes

BRECKENRIDGE – The Colorado Department of Revenue seized Lone Star Sports in Breckenridge Tuesday for nonpayment of taxes.The ski and golf shop is owned by former town councilmember Greg Abernathy.According to Colorado Department of Revenue agent George Riser, the company owes an estimated $20,420 for sales taxes that were collected but not remitted to the state from January to May of this year, and employee withholding taxes that haven’t been paid to the state since March. The estimated amount does not include taxes owed for May and June, Riser said. And when penalties and interest are added in, it brings the total to $48,258, said Rose Silva of the Department of Revenue.Abernathy also owes $15,803 to the town of Breckenridge, Silva said.Abernathy has a week in which to pay the taxes. If he is unable to, the business will go up for auction. A tentative auction date is set for 11 a.m. on Aug. 4.Abernathy declined to comment.- Jane Stebbins
