Long applauded for upholding rights of the general public

I am writing in response to the letter from Ed Noordewier, regarding County Commissioner Tom Long and the possibility of a local hospital facility.

I feel it is Dr. Noordewier who misses the point.

The point, sir, is this; If a hospital comes to Summit County it would be established on land provided by the county, not on land purchased by the hospital, church or a philanthropic group.

That is the bigger issue, not the word choice of the commissioner or the actuality of what services would be performed at the hospital.

Which brings me to my second point. Since this land would be provided by the taxpayers, how can we justify not providing certain services?  Understandably, the most desirable setting to deal with these issues would be in a physician’s office. Yet there should be no question of whether or not an establishment will provide services.

I applaud Mr. Long for his complete honesty and his concern for all of his constituents, not only the ones who happened to be registered within his own party.

Is it really so horrible that a politician is not afraid of how he will be portrayed by the newspaper, who will voice his opinion even if it is not the popular one? I think not.

I urge Dr. Noordewier and others to look at the bigger issues, the issues that our nation was founded on.

I would ask them to remember those issues when they realize how much they value the freedom of individual choice.
