Look to other reasons for Breck’s revenue woes

Carrie Denkinger

I am writing in response to the recent article concerning sales revenue in Breckenridge. In addition to some of the realistic economic factors in the region, state and country, I feel there is a more local issue that is important – basic and good customer service.

During the past Christmas season, I found myself trying to support the local economy and not do any holiday shopping in Denver, even if it meant spending a little more money. So, six days before Christmas I thought surely I would find some holiday spirit and small-town good cheer in Breckenridge. Instead, I left the town feeling disappointed at the lack of good customer service, let alone holiday spirit.

I had made a bad choice by spending my shopping day in Breckenridge. There were no greetings from salespeople, instead, they were engrossed in a book or writing holiday cards, perhaps. There was one store, out of 15 shops and restaurants I visited that was the exception – Canary in a Clothes Mine. I had no one on my list that fit the profile of that particular shop, but the salesperson was in the holiday spirit, talking to me and showing me neat items. I found myself purchasing lots of things at that store and changing my list, because I didn’t have much shopping time left.

Businesses in Breckenridge should consider improving “good old customer service” first before looking to other reasons for decreasing sales revenues.
