Lord of the Mountains to host dinner presentation on Haiti


Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in cooperation with Summit County Rotary is hosting Wade McGuinn as part of a series of information sharing events on the work being done in Haiti by these local organizations, in partnership with the Methodiste Eglise Haiti.A Haitian dinner will be prepared by local chef, Doug Schwartz, followed by a slide show beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. A free will donation is being accepted to cover the cost of the meal.McGuinn, who works with the Methodist Churches in South Carolina is overseeing the construction of an orphanage for 50 children in the town of Jeremie, one of the poorest communities in one of the poorest countries in the world.While Summit County Rotary is working on a project to install toilets in the Jean Wesley Elementary School in Jeremie, Lord of the Mountains is working to raise funds to build a home for senior citizens who lack resources for food and housing. More than $75,000 is needed to build the home for up to 30 seniors. Pledges are being accepted for food and lodging at a cost of $100 a month for each senior.Frank Bumpus, Doug Schwartz, and Deborah Hage recently traveled to Haiti to determine what volunteer opportunities were available to Rotary and Lord of the Mountains. They brought money raised to replace a leaking roof of the Methodist pastor’s home. Details of a two-week trip to provide a summer camp for the orphanage children will also be shared. Community volunteers will lead the children in music, art, science, games, crafts and language improvement in both French and English.
