Lori Widdifield: Why’d Forest Service close Heeney campground?

An injustice has been done to many campers here and near. What in the heck are they trying to prove in closing South Cow Creek campground in the middle of camping season? The U.S. Forest Service has gone and done it again, losing money and taking away great camping experiences for the people who come out to enjoy Green Mountain Reservoir. Without this campground, many campers were forced to turn around and go home once they arrived later on, in the dark, Friday night. Some campers were luckily offered tent space by other campers. Shaking their heads in disgust, how did the Forest Service pull this one off?

The U.S. Forest Service asked us locals to help pick up trash and keep the campgrounds clean because they do not have the money to hire anyone to do this. They are doing what? Today as I look across the lake, I do not see one green Forest Service truck doing their job of putting up picnic tables or widening the roads. I bet if the Forest Service would contract these jobs to be done it would not take more than two weeks to have the jobs done. With $1.475 million to Green Mountain Reservoir from the federal stimulus funding program, we would think the Forest Service would take this money and get on the project right away.

All the pencil pushing the government will have to have done before work can start will delay this program for how long? Give the campers at least until the first of September to enjoy. Wake up U.S. Forest Service; we ticks are saying something.
