Lowe’s unveils plans for Silverthorne store

SILVERTHORNE – The public got a first look at a proposed Lowe’s home-improvement store in Silverthorne at a community meeting Thursday.
Lowe’s representative Scott Bradshaw presented plans for the proposed 111,000-square-foot store with attached 27,000-square-foot garden center. The development would sit on 11.2 acres of land at the intersection of Wildernest Road and Buffalo Mountain Drive – site of the former Subaru dealership. Landscaped areas would comprise a quarter of the development’s total footprint.
Some meeting attendees voiced concerns over impacts on traffic and views, while others expressed relief at the prospect of not having to drive to Denver or Avon to visit home-improvement stores of similar size. About 30 people attended the meeting.
Developers have proposed a number of traffic and road improvements around the site, including a new traffic signal
or roundabout at the intersection of Buffalo Mountain Drive, Wildernest Road and Adams Avenue. They would also install a traffic signal at the intersection of Wildernest Road and Stephens Way and make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
Wildernest resident Sue McHenry worried about the increase in traffic volume the store would generate.
“For people who live in Mesa Cortina and Wildernest, we’re going to have to run this gauntlet of traffic lights and roundabouts,” McHenry said.
Citizens at the meeting questioned the viability of two “big-box” home-improvement stores, since Home Depot also has a proposed store working its way through the Town of Silverthorne’s planning process.
Bradshaw said his hometown of Bozeman, Mont., with a population of about 35,000, has a Lowe’s, a Home Depot and several locally owned hardware and home-improvement stores that all stay busy. He said no Lowe’s stores have closed in the past five years.
Dillon residents Steve Kelly and Chris Moulton, both general contractors, were pleased about the possibility having more options for construction materials in Summit County.
“Nowadays, I get shop around from wherever I can to save money for my clients,” Moulton said. “I’m all for competition.”
Both men said they source materials from a variety of locations from Eagle County to Denver, including from existing retailers in Summit County, such as BigHorn Materials and the Breckenridge Building Center.
Lowe’s representatives will host another community meeting the last week of January. The location and time has not yet been determined. Developers will refine plans before presenting to the Silverthorne Planning Commission, scheduled for Feb. 2.
