Man accused of attacking deputy

MEAD – A man discovered outside his ex-wife’s home fought with a Weld County deputy until a police officer came to the deputy’s aid, authorities said Monday.John Robert Edwards, 36, of Longmont, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of assault, resisting arrest, violating a protection order, harassment and other charges. The deputy was treated at the scene for swelling and bruising on his face.Authorities said the deputy, identified only by his last name of Holmen, had responded to a call from a woman who suspected her ex-husband was outside her Mead home. She said the man had threatened to kill her in the past and had left “degrading” messages on her answering machine.Holmen spotted the suspect holding wire cutters and standing near a utility box outside the home and ordered him to put his hands on his head. The suspect abruptly turned and began punching Holmen when the deputy searched him, authorities said.Holmen called for emergency backup, and a police officer from nearby Firestone responded, helping Holmen subdue and handcuff the man.
