Man arrested on attempted vehicular assault charge at Copper Mountain after witnesses report slurs, threats, altercation with employee

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says no one was injured in the incident but the 50-year-old Summit County man was arrested on charges including attempted vehicular assault

A local man is facing criminal charges after law enforcement officers say he intentionally hit a Copper Mountain employee with his vehicle last week.

Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, deputies received a report of a man at the Far East Lot hitting the ski resort employee with his car, making violent threats and shouting racial slurs, Summit County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Schilling said.

Before law enforcement officers arrived, bystanders intervened by taking the man’s keys and restraining him on the ground, Schilling stated. Deputies spoke with multiple witnesses who stated that the man had been yelling racial and sexual slurs at the staff member before deliberately reversing his vehicle into the employee, despite bystanders attempting to warn him not to, according to Schilling.

Medical personnel on scene evaluated the employee and confirmed he had no injuries, Schilling stated. Deputies arrested the 50-year-old Summit County man on charges of attempted vehicular assault and reckless driving before transporting him to the local jail, he added.

“There is no excuse for violence, reckless behavior, or hateful language,” Schilling said in a statement. “Actions like this have consequences; I’m relieved no one was hurt.”
