Man dies at Copper Mountain after fall into tree well

COPPER MOUNTAIN – A 22-year-old Jewett City, Conn., man is dead after he apparently fell face down into a tree well on the Union Meadows run on the west side of Copper Mountain Monday afternoon.

The man, whose name won’t be released until his next of kin are notified, was located by ski patrollers at 3:06 p.m.

They administered advanced life support procedures before transferring him to Colorado Mountain Medical Center at the base of the resort.

Medical staff continued to administer life support; doctors pronounced him dead at 4:46 p.m.

Another skier, 77-year-old Paul Arndt of Leadville, died at the resort March 6 after suffering a heart attack. Arndt, who suffered from atherosclerotic disease, was a ski instructor and science teacher in Lake County.

His death is not listed as a skier death because it was the result of a medical problem.

Colorado Ski Country USA keeps record of fatalities at its 24 member resorts throughout the season.

The organization defines a skier fatality as one in which a person has died due to a trauma-related collision with another individual, tree, sign, structure, etc., within ski area boundaries during resort operating hours.

Health-related fatalities, such as heart attacks that occur in-bounds during resort operating hours, are not tracked by the organization and are released at the discretion of the resort.
