BRECKENRIDGE ” A man who pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and felony menacing ” which occurred in 2007 ” was sentenced Friday to 12 years with a 6-year concurrent sentence, according to a press release from District Attorney Mark Hurlbert’s office.

Justin Reid stabbed two unarmed men in the early morning hours of Feb. 13, 2007 after the three had been drinking at a bar in Breckenridge. They had not known each other before the incident.

Reid, then 30, was arrested and victims Michael Day, then 29, and Justin Knight, then 26, were taken to Summit Medical Center, where both underwent surgery, according to a previous report in the Summit Daily. The incident occurred outside La Cima Mall.

One of the victims had been stabbed in the chest, extremely close to the heart.

“He spoke of a difference that ‘a millisecond’ made in that, had his heart been expanded rather than contracted at the time he was stabbed, the knife would have pierced his heart and he would have likely bled to death,” according to accounts in the press release.

The other victim, upon seeing his friend fall and Reid flee, chased Reid down and the two fell to the ground. The victim sustained multiple wounds to his arms and hand, and Reid screamed that he was going to kill him, according to the press release.

Judge Karen Romeo cited several “aggravating factors” in reaching the sentencing decision. These included the use of a knife against unarmed victims, the “gravity and permanence of the victims’ injuries,” a prior felony conviction and more, according to the press release.
