Man who owed millions in taxes sentenced

DENVER ” The former co-owner of a nursing staffing agency convicted of failing to pay millions of dollars in taxes will spend 37 months in prison.

Federal prosecutors say 59-year-old William Crabbe failed to pay $4.24 million in taxes between June 30, 2000 and Dec. 31 2002. He co-owned the now-defunct Columbine Health Care Systems Inc. in Greeley.

A grand jury indicted Crabbe in 2006 on charges of failing to pay federal payroll taxes and filing false employment tax returns. Prosecutors called it one of the largest tax fraud cases in Colorado history.

Co-owner of the company James Rowan plead guilty to tax evasion. Prosecutors say he failed to pay $4.23 million in taxes.

The staffing agency placed nurses in various health care facilities.

Crabbe was sentenced Thursday.
