Mark Jeche: Why can’t we share?!

I don’t understand why non-motorized recreationalists can’t share the trails with the motorized recreationalists! Soon the Sally Barber Road will be closed to motorized use. This “road” connects the Baldy Road area to the French Gulch area and is the ONLY access from Baldy Road to French Creek. I live on the Baldy Road side, and for the last 15 years have ridden my bicycle, my motorcycles and my snowmobiles over Sally Barber “road,” which is the only way to get from Baldy Road to the unlimited amount of trails/roads between French Gulch and Montezuma!

Last year someone put up “no public motorized vehicles” sign on Sally Barber Road on the French Gulch side. I noticed this sign two weeks after coming into contact with a sherriff’s deputy on Sally Barber Road while on my snowmobile. Why didn’t the deputy say something to me about this while speaking with me on my snowmobile that day? I called the sherriff’s office and the deputy inquired where this sign was, and it was subsequently removed. I have spoken to county officials regarding the closing of this trail, and the way it sounds to me is that non-motorized users know people in the right places and have been sucking up to them.

Trails and roads all over Summit County are being closed to motorized use – why cant we share? Are there any motorized trails closed to non-motorized use? No, I don’t think so! If we can share, why cant you share the trail with us. If you don’t want to share, then stick to the trails already closed to us! Now if I want to recreate I’ll have to buy a vehicle that can pull a trailer – and a trailer!
