Martin Sexton brings it all back to the sound

RYAN SLABAUGHsummit daily news

If you haven’t seen Martin Sexton, no bother. Mangy sideburns hang down his sandpaper cheeks, and his posture mirrors an old hobbit with a penchant for beer. Even when he smiles, there’s a twinge of cynicism that keeps his smile lopsided. If you haven’t heard Martin Sexton, however, then stop what you’re doing, download or buy his music, and kick back. His voice – at times a trumpet, at times an electric guitar – can range from the scratchy shriek of Robert Plant to the smooth crooning of Otis Redding. Sexton, who took his beauty-and-the-beast act to Sherpa and Yeti’s in Breckenridge on Monday, walked onto the stage and shouted, and that shout turned into a song. With just his guitar, he romanced and charged up the crowd into a whooping frenzy with songs like “13-step Boogie,” while after more sentimental tunes like “Hallelujah,” the crowd relaxed and drifted to-and-fro, more like buoys on a calm sea than fans at a rock-and-roll show.Sexton played for nearly two hours before departing the stage. His versatile talent left not only a big impression on those who saw him perform, plus a lingering idea: Perhaps the rocks and pits that have eroded Sexton’s looks, have also crafted one of the most intense, angelic voices in today’s singer-songwriter world.See him? Nothing. Hear him? Everything.
