Master gardener program sign-up nears

The deadline to register is Dec. 15. for Summit County/CSU Cooperative Extension’s Apprentice Master Gardeners course. The course provides 80 hours of intensive training in soils, irrigation, plant growth and development, entomology, plant pathology, and pesticide safety. Additional sessions include trees and shrub selection and planting, turf and grass management, water-wise and high altitude gardening. Apprentice Master Gardeners in turn agree to contribute 50 hours of volunteer service to Cooperative Extension, helping to solve gardening problems in the county and assisting the public with horticulture education. Summit County’s mountain environment poses unique challenges to gardening, such as a short growing season, severe winters and difficult soils. Training will take place on Thursdays at the County Commons near Frisco beginning Jan. 27 and running through March 31. The cost of the apprentice program is $125. There is also the option to pay an additional $300 tuition fee for the training and waive the volunteer requirement. For more information on the program, call (970) 668-4140.
