Mastin: The time has come to trash the bag

Amy Mastin, Silverthorne

To the Breckenridge Town Council: I laud the town’s efforts to address the problem of single-use plastic bags. This can be a tricky undertaking for local governments, but, with a fair approach, it will be well worth the effort. I submit for evidence: down in Arizona for a few Rockies Spring Training games, my first pick up was a bag at Trader Joe’s: an attractive, useful, inexpensive souvenir that will remind me of a great trip and that I will enjoy using for many years on my trips to City Market and other retail venues. A reusable bag promoting Breckenridge will reap similar benefits for the town – not only in promoting the area as a destination, but in highlighting a thoughtful approach to waste reduction. I can’t tell you how many plastic bags we saw floating in the breeze or latched to fences on the drive down here – the time has come to tackle this problem.
