Math teacher’s contract not renewed

SUMMIT COUNTY – The Board of Education Thursday sent high school math teacher Sandy Brown a certified letter explaining her non-renewal.

The school board voted Wednesday night to not renew Brown’s contract. Brown, a math teacher, is finishing her second year at the high school. Her non-renewal was based on a recommendation from principal evaluations.

Students and parents pleaded with board members to keep Brown. Each student described how Brown was able to turn them on to math, explain concepts in a way they could understand and also was someone students could talk to about school and personal matters.

The principal’s evaluation of Brown reportedly expressed concerns that she did not effectively use all of the 90-minute class periods and required students to take notes, as opposed to providing prepared hand-outs, among other issues.

A story in Friday’s Summit Daily News should have stated the board voted for the non-renewal at its Wednesday meeting.
