Mayor of Fairplay steps down

Linda Balough

Fairplay – Fairplay Mayor Tammy Quinn gave the Fairplay town board of trustees a letter of resignation on Monday, saying she would step down on Oct. 22.Quinn stated she would no longer be residing in the town and therefore rendered her ineligible to serve. She told the board she would be relocating to Texas to be with her husband, Carroll, who had been assigned by his employer to transfer to the Dallas area. Mayor Pro-tem Rachael Edwards will replace Quinn for the completion of her term. “It’s been an exciting journey,” Quinn said. “I give to the people … my best wishes and my compassion.” She said she came to the conclusion on Sunday night, while returning to Fairplay from a visit with her family in Texas, that she should be with them and should not wait to finish her tenure as mayor.Officer suspendedOther business brought before the board included a decision by the town police chief Dave Gottschalk to issue a 10-day suspension of duties for officer Chris Deroba. While the board could have gone into executive session to discuss the personnel matter, Deroba chose to continue the discussion in the public meeting. Gottschalk told the board he felt the action was necessary because of statements made by Deroba to other town employees that were critical of the chief of police.Fairplay’s top cop told the board he felt the comments were an attempt to undermine his authority and were an attempt by that officer and the mayor to “push me out.” Deroba claimed the suspension was given without a predisciplinary hearing required in the department personnel manual, and contended the action was unmerited, since the comments were simply normal griping to co-workers and not in a public forum.
