Mayor, two council members lead campaign for Safeway; that’s disturbing

Tracy LeClair, Silverthorne

Does anyone else find it disturbing that the mayor of Silverthorne and two town council members are the ones spearheading the effort to rezone the Smith Ranch property?

I think it is extremely inappropriate for these elected officials to attempt to sway public opinion, especially when they seem to be working on behalf of Kornfeld-Koslosky and (supposedly) Safeway.

This issue will be decided by a vote of the people Dec. 9, so shouldn’t the council’s efforts be focused on the priorities of their constituents, and not some personal agenda?

When this project was originally proposed, it had many supporters because in addition to the retail components, the developer was also proposing a day-care center, elementary school site and affordable housing.

Now, the school is being built elsewhere, and the only component left is the retail, without even a firm contract from Safeway.

It seems that Kornfeld-Koslosky will have yet another half-vacant strip mall in Silverthorne, and we won’t see any of the real “benefits” of this project.

The town of Silverthorne also recently hired a consultant who advised focusing on Adams or Bryant streets as a “main” street.

By insisting that a grocery store must be situated on the Smith Ranch because of its proximity to Highway 9, Silverthorne is ignoring its own high-priced consultant.

I agree that property owners should have the right to use or develop their property, but I do not agree that they have an automatic right to change the zoning.

If this were the case, we wouldn’t need to have zoning laws. Vote no Dec. 9.
