McDonald’s would take awayBreckenridge’s unique appeal

Polly AbernathyBreckenridge

Growing up in Breckenridge was a wonderful opportunity. I didn’t realize what a magnificent place it was until I went away to college. I didn’t go far, but I went far enough to experience the city atmosphere. Spending nine months in a city really made me appreciate how amazing Breckenridge is. When I returned from school and learned that there might be a McDonald’s, I was furious. Breckenridge is a beautiful town that does not need to be just like every other place in America. One of the great things about Breckenridge is that it is unique. I remember when there was a Wendy’s, and sure it was a fun place, but honestly I was glad to see it go. I don’t want to see Breckenridge ruined by the corporate takeover that is so popular these days. That Breckenridge is so different from everywhere else is what makes it appealing. A majority of the businesses are small, locally-owned businesses. I have seen what a corporate company can do to these small businesses. When the Starbucks was opened, I watched the local coffee shops loose business. I don’t want to see this happen to other businesses in Breckenridge. I understand that the land where the McDonald’s could be built should be developed into something other than what it is now.But I don’t agree with building something that will take away business from the locals who have worked so hard to get where they are only to be ruined by a fast-food restaurant! Breckenridge is a town, not a city. We do not need all the franchises a city offers. The one thing that I love most about Breckenridge is that is doesn’t have all the corporate businesses a city has, is has a small-town appeal. I would hate to see that appeal lost by allowing corporations to take over this beautiful, quaint mountain town. Polly AbernathyBreckenridge
