Measure 3B: Bond Issue

Summit Middle School is in desperate need of repair. Frisco Elementary School could use some updates. Summit High School needs space to house an expanding career and technical program.

Summit School Board is hoping voters will come to the rescue Nov. 2, by approving Measure 3B, a 20-year, $32.6 million bond issue that would fund the renovations, additions and upgrades.

The district would use the majority of the bond funds would to demolish and rebuild much of the outdated middle school. School board member Stuart Adams has described the existing school as a “Band-Aid on top of a Band-Aid on top of a Band-Aid.”

The facility was once a three-building campus with an elementary school, middle school and high school. The building now known as Summit Middle School is the result of “40 years of creative construction,” according to board member Jay Brunvand, who attended the building decades ago as a student.

The proposed renovations to Summit Middle School would cost about $23.1 million of the bond money.

The high school would receive $5.4 million, which would pay for a new wing for career and technical programs in addition to other building upgrades. Frisco Elementary would be home to a new media center and five new classrooms, and the old Silverthorne elementary school, now known as the Summit Education Center, would receive $345,000 to pay for a new roof or other emergency needs that may arise.

The bond would cost a taxpayer with a $400,000 home about $39 annually.
