COPPER MOUNTAIN ” After four men’s slopestyle qualifying heats at the U.S. Freeskiing Open, a group of 187 skiers has been dwindled down to 25.

Roy Kittler (83 points) was Thursday’s top scorer. He was followed in the afternoon heat by Thomas Dolplads (82.25), BB Stian (80.5), Oscar Harlaut (78), Breckenridge’s Duncan Adams (76) and Chase Crane (76).

Kittler, who said he had a stomach full of butterflies before competing, was a model of consistency, scoring a 79.5 in his first run.

“I will just take a safe one first,” Kittler said before earning the third best score of the day. “I need to have a base.”

Colby West was the No.1 qualifier in the morning heat with a score of 78.75. He was closely followed by Joe Schuster (78), Max Peters (77.25), Tosh Peters (76.75), Henrik Harlaut (75.75) and Wiley Miller (75.25).

The second heat’s top 25 was laden with Summit Countians led by Adams. Among them were Copper Freeride Team member Taylor Seaton (11th), Team Summit’s Bobby Brown (12th), Breck’s Jon Lafferty (17th) and Breck Freeride Team member Clay Bryant (22nd).

Both Lafferty and Bryant said they took a slightly conservative approach in the interest of saving a few tricks for possible future rounds.

“I definitely like to save one more rotation for the semis if I get there,” Bryant said. “But I have looked back before and said I could have done more.”

A few more qualifiers will advance from this morning’s fifth and final heat, which includes a smaller number of competitors than the first four.

In all, nine countries are represented in the qualifying heats: the U.S., Canada, Australia, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Japan, New Zealand and France.

Skiers who advance from the five heats will meet 22 pre-qualified athletes in today’s semifinals beginning at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The finals are set for 3:45 p.m.
