Microphone Marathon raises $30,000

FRISCO – Summit County’s families have a little bigger safety net this year. The 2004 Krystal 93 Microphone Marathon raised a record $30,000 to benefit the Family and Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC), which provides emergency assistance to families in need.”I’m euphoric,” said FIRC director Christina Carlson, who spent 14 straight hours on the air Dec. 10 with Krystal DJ Tom Fricke, auctioning off prizes and appealing for contributions. “Raising the goal by $5,000 this year had me a little nervous, but the community really came through. Every year, I’m amazed at the overwhelming support we get.”Each holiday season, Krystal dedicates a day’s airwaves to helping local families. One of the station’s DJs remains on the air with FIRC staff for as long as it takes to meet the event’s donation goal. During its 20 years, Microphone Marathon has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “It’s so much fun, and it’s so incredibly rewarding to be a part of it,” said Krystal general manager Mo Bennett. “This year was really a milestone, because we had our sights set higher. And people just stepped right up to the plate.”The FIRC’s emergency assistance program provides childcare assistance, financial help for rent, energy bills, medical and dental costs, a food bank and other community services.”One of the things that’s great about this year,” Carlson said, “is that we’re designating all the money to emergency assistance, so the contributions really do go right out to the community. The truth of the matter is energy bills are up, the season started a little slowly and people are in need.”Julie Sutor can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 203, or at jsutor@summitdaily.com.
