Middle school students tackle adult issues in dramatic double-header

Andy Stonehouse

FRISCO – Students at Summit Middle School will be tackling a theatrical twosome that’s a bit different than traditional school stage material.

Starting tonight, parents, friends and neighbors can check out Janet McDermott’s drama class and the pair of plays that’s kept the kids busy for the last semester: “Yearbook” and “A Game.”

McDermott said both shows share common themes, celebrating both diversity and the common themes that tie students (and adults) together.

The plays are also good opportunities for the young actors to share equal stage time: Students Jenny O’Neill, Matt Lefevre, Drew Arnesen and Kadie Huse play “Yearbook’s” main roles, while “A Game” features Shelbie Ebert, Andrew Vawter-Beaird, Garrett Hedman and Holly Westwood.

“These shows are very nicely put together with some equal-opportunity type roles,” McDermott said. “I think the kids are really enjoying it.”

McDermott said it’s also been a useful experience for the youngsters to be involved in shows that might normally be reserved for the high-school level:

“Part of what’s good about these plays is that they kind of help middle school students to understand what it’s like to be in high school.”

The two plays, clocking in at about an hour and a half combined, will be performed at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the Summit Middle School auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students.
