Mike Smith: Leave handicapped spots for the handicapped

Mike Smith
Dillon

The article mentions the response from some of the recipients of these citations and their excuses. As most of the full- time residents know, we have a handicapped daughter confined to a wheelchair, and oftentimes we find these type of people just using the handicap space for a very short time as to run whatever place for “just a minute” to do whatever. My statement most of the time is stupidity does not qualify for that parking privilege. I would never wish someone would have to use a wheelchair and push it in the snow or try to take a person out of a handicapped vehicle in a wheelchair. Above all, I have yet to see a community anywhere I have traveled throughout this country that didn’t have regulations regarding handicapped parking, and Breckenridge’s fine of $100 is nominal in comparison to the other towns in Summit County. I have seen signs for violating handicapped parking regulations as high as $250, and in a couple of towns , I recently saw a fine posted for $300.

It is sad that oftentimes visitors, when visiting our beautiful county, forget we have laws and regulations as they have at their homes and are there for not only our protection but also for their protection and safety. I just ask that people when parking anywhere keep in mind that there are those less fortunate than us, and they need to have clearance to also enjoy the beauty of our area and give consideration to those that need special help.
