Mikutowski: Police state of Summit County?

Scott Mikutowski, Silverthorne

This goes out as an all citizens bulletin. Be aware Summit County, you are not safe here. You are in danger, but not from criminals, terrorists, or acts of violence. In fact, there are very few real dangers here, defined in the traditional sense that is. The actual danger here, comes from the very people that are supposedly here to “serve and protect.” I am of course talking about the corrupt police force we have here in Summit County. If you don’t believe me, here is all the evidence you need that your rights, as guaranteed by the US constitution, don’t mean anything and that you are guilty until proven innocent. While driving on highway 6 toward Dillon, our vehicle was pulled over by one of these corrupt officers. As a working, tax- paying member of Summit County for the last five years, I know where the speed zones are and obey them religiously. This was not a question of speed however, self admittedly by the officer in this “criminal investigation.” No, tonight, the “violation” was a burnt out tail light. Now, no one here is debating that driving with a light out is in fact illegal, so when we were made aware of this, we were quite relieved to find out that the officer was nice enough to “let us go” with a verbal warning this time. So what’s the problem? The problem comes in the fact that when we arrived at our destination, we thoroughly checked every light on the vehicle. Tail lights, turn signals, running lights, and breaks, only to discover that every single light was in working order. So why were we pulled over? No real reason at all. Too bad he didn’t “find” anything to arrest us for. Fourth Amendment.
