Missing skiers found on Grand Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION ” Rescue crews found a woman and her daughter alive early Tuesday, two days after they failed to return from a cross-country skiing outing on western Colorado’s Grand Mesa. The woman’s husband was still missing.

Debra Walker and her 18-year-old daughter, Camille, were found at about 8 a.m., Mesa County sheriff’s spokeswoman Susan McBurney said. She did not have details on their condition, but said a medical evacuation from the mesa was not needed.

“We’re still waiting on information,” she said. “Dan Walker has not been located yet.”

The family were reported missing on Monday, a day after they left on their outing. A search team of nearly two dozen people spotted fresh tracks Monday evening, apparently left by three people and a dog.

Up to 8 feet of snow has fallen on the top of the 10,500-foot-high mesa since Saturday, and the temperature has hovered in the 20s, National Weather Service forecaster Brian Avery said. It was not immediately clear whether the mother and daughter were found on the mesa top.

Temperatures were expected to plunge sharply beginning Wednesday, dipping below zero by Thursday.

Much of western and central Colorado has been hammered for nearly two weeks by rain and snow, with more in the forecast Tuesday. The Silverton Mountain ski area said it had received 117 inches of snow in the past 13 days ” nearly 10 feet ” and snow or avalanche control work had closed several mountain passes, all in southwest Colorado.
