Mitchell education legislation would demonize gay community

It has come to my attention that on Monday the state House Education Committee will be holding a hearing on House Bill No. 1375, introduced by Rep. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield.

This bill is yet another attempt at the right to impose their compassionless conservatism on the general public.

It is designed to ban discussion of gay and lesbian issues in schools statewide, unless it is in the context of instruction concerning the risk and prevention of sexually transmitted disease.

I guess that means the “gay marriage” issue would not be allowed to be discussed in current events, despite the fact it is all over the news.

Par for the course, I say. Mr. Mitchell would like to keep teachers from discussing gay and lesbian issues unless it is in a negative context.

I, for one, think that all high school students should learn about the decades, no centuries of violence, bigotry and hatred that gays and lesbians have had to fight against.

We are taught about the struggles of the Jews, African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and Asians, among others.

Why not homosexuals? Why are some people so afraid of teaching our children the truth about the world?

Don’t we want them to be prepared, informed and instilled with a sense of respect for all human beings? Denying something does not make it go away. To quote a poem that is close to my heart:

“You see, this pious propaganda is just prejudicial fear

and despite this disapproval, we will never disappear.”

My message to Mr. Mitchell, “You obviously have a problem with gays and lesbians. Stop wasting our time and tax dollars with your personal problems.”
