Moderate earthquake shakes Southeast Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ” A moderate earthquake jolted Southeast Alaska on Tuesday and was widely felt throughout the Panhandle.

The 6:49 a.m. quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center in Fairbanks. It was centered 57 miles west of Haines at a depth of five miles.

The shallow earthquake was felt in Haines, Juneau, Sitka and numerous other communities. There were no immediate reports of damage, according to the earthquake information center.
