BRECKENRIDGE – Art has been used for generations to express hopes, fears and successes. Now local mothers-to-be are expressing their feelings through art.Laurie Simpkins, a doula and certified massage therapist specializing in prenatal massage, has added another Art of Birth workshop due to demand. The next workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9 in Breckenridge. The holistic workshop provides expectant mothers with an artistic outlet to explore and express their feelings about childbirth.

“Right before I gave birth to my son, I had this dream about a white wolf. Through Laurie’s guidance I was able to take this image I had in my head and recreate it in clay. I’m going to take this and hang it in my son’s room as a reminder to me and a token to him of my experience,” said Corrie Burr, a participant. On June 14, Simpkins led women through creative exercises based on the book “Birthing from Within” by Pam England and Rob Horowitz. They expressed stream-of-consciousness thoughts and feelings about pregnancy and birth with watercolor, oil crayon, charcoal pencils and clay.

“It was amazing the transformation people experienced,” said Audrey Shaw, director of Sacred Tree. “I had goosebumps watching it.”The next workshop will be at Sacred Tree. The cost is $40 before Friday, July 1 and $50 after that date. To register, call (970) 453-8558.
