Mountain lion struck, killed by vehicle

ASPEN TIMES STAFF REPORT

SNOWMASS – A mountain lion was killed after it was struck by a vehicle at mile marker 27.3 on Highway 82 in Snowmass Canyon early Friday, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

“It was wounded by the car then we had to put it down,” said Deputy George Kremer. He wasn’t at the scene so he wasn’t able to gauge the mountain lion’s size. The report noted it was a female. Kremer said they are typically 60 to 70 pounds and are generally “all tail and fur” at this time of year.

The extent of damage to the vehicle wasn’t noted in the report.

Kremer said a another mountain lion was killed near that same site in a prior accident some time ago as it dragged a deer carcass across the highway.
