Mountain Mentors honors Lauren Cummings as Mentor of the Month
A community-based mentorship program that matches volunteers with children ages 8 to 16, Summit County Mountain Mentors, has named Lauren Cummings its Mentor of the Month for October.
Studies have shown that a consistent, one-on-one relationship with an adult can positively influence youth to lead more healthy lifestyles.
For her part in the local program, Cummings was paired with a girl named Joseline. Since then, Cummings has greatly enjoyed coming to know Joseline and the girl’s family.
“They all have been wonderful, and Joseline and I have gotten to do so many cool things I otherwise wouldn’t have done,” Cummings said, adding that going to the Elitch Gardens theme park in Denver stands out because they “had such a blast” together.
“I also like the horse activities we have done — three so far,” Cummings continued. “Joseline is really good with animals, and I have loved watching her ride and work with them.”
If Cummings has any advice for someone thinking about becoming a mentor, it’s this: “If you can really commit to the time and want to spend time with a cool mountain kid, just do it,” she said. “You won’t regret it, and you will make a real impact.”
