Mountain Outfitters wins Biz of the Year

SUMMIT COUNTY – When Mountain Outfitters owner Ket McSparin helped out a customer in his store early this winter, he had no idea what a windfall would come from such simple attentiveness.

Months later, Friends Welcome, a program of the Breckenridge Resort Chamber in support of good customer service as a business practice, bestowed Mountain Outfitters with its annual Business of the Year award.

“We took good care of him as we typically do with people,” McSparin said. “We’ve tried for years to just be helpful and knowledgeable, not condescending. We just help people the best we can.”

That helped McSparin out, in turn, when he was nominated for an Employee of the Month award. Since he owned the store, Mountain Outfitters received the designation Business of the Month, automatically entering it in the annual contest.

Recently it was chosen from a field of four candidates by a panel including the town manager, representatives from local businesses and last year’s winner, Storm Enterprises, owner of Hearthstone Victorian Dining in Breckenridge, the Mi Casa restaurants in Breckenridge and Keystone, and Hearthstone Catering.

It won thanks to its very “traditional role” of being customer-service oriented, said Jennifer Federocko, Friends Welcome director.

“It basically comes down to (the question) – “Is this the type of business we feel is representative of the customer culture we’re trying to embody here in Breckenridge?'” she said. “Not only does (Ket) personally have what it takes, but he really appreciates his role in the community and the role his customers play in the business.”

Mountain Outfitters will receive a complimentary full-page color advertisement in next year’s Breckenridge Vacation Planner in addition to various other marketing bonuses, McSparin said.
