When the Frisco Specialty Clinic opens Monday, Aug. 18, it will be the first place in Summit County to offer preventive breast cancer imaging in 3D.
Similar to a CT scan, 3D mammography takes images of the breasts in slices, giving radiologists more information in hopes of detecting and treating cancer early.
“One of the things we’ve found is that breast cancer tends to be more aggressive in younger women,” said Dr. Janice Ugale, radiologist and breast imaging specialist at Shaw Regional Cancer Center. “When you look at 40- to 50-year-old women, they’re in the prime of their lives. They have jobs, children, and it’s a big impact if they’re diagnosed too late.”
She recommends that women follow the American Cancer Society guidelines that women start annual mammograms at age 40.
Besides the breast cancer center, the speciality clinic at 323 Main St. also will offer cardiology, internal medicine and endocrinology services.
The clinic is a new campus of the nonprofit Vail Valley Medical Center. For more information, visit vvmc.com/summit or call (970) 668-8970.
