Music and Lobster Fest June 23-24 near Glenwood

CARBONDALE – Fifty local musicians will perform this year during the second annual Carbondale Music and Lobster Fest, showcasing some of the very best talents the valley has to offer. And up to 1,000 fresh Maine lobsters will be groovin’ to the tunes before they take a dip in Carbondale’s bubbling hot spring. The event is sponsored by the town of Carbondale and Steve Standiford of Steve’s Guitars. It has been expanded this year to two days, June 23 and 24, offering more music and more lobster. To avoid looking like a stray dog at a barbecue, get your lobster tickets before the June 16 deadline – last year all the lobsters were sold out, leaving hundreds to beg for scraps. Don’t be left out, warns Chris “Woodsie” Woods, special events coordinator for the town of Carbondale, the lobster order must go in early.”Last year we didn’t have enough lobster. We’re renting all of the equipment for two days so it seemed like a no-brainer to expand the event,” said Woods who is busy selling tickets for the hourly seatings for Friday night and Saturday. “For the town we just cover expenses and we try to keep the costs down. We’re going to have $2 PBRs, wine, margaritas, a bunch of kids activities. It’s going to be great.” The Music and Lobster Fest grew out of a local music festival called the Mountain Music Fair started by Standiford five years ago to showcase local musicians after Mountain Fair began bringing in bigger acts from out of town.”Local bands couldn’t get into Mountain Fair anymore,” said Standiford, who’s been hosting live music in the Dinkel building since 1993. “This is really a great collaboration between the town and private business. It should really be a model.”The idea to collaborate came after Woods received an e-mail about an organization called Lobsterado that brought in fresh lobster for events in Colorado, giving proceeds to various do-good organizations.Woods thought lobster and live local music sounded like a great combination, and from there a partnership was formed.”There’s no way I’d be able to book all of this music. I don’t have a clue,” said Woods about Standiford’s job of arranging for more than 50 musicians to come and play at 10 different venues in two days. “And vice versa,” added Standiford. “I wouldn’t want to have to sell tickets for so many different seatings of lobster and arrange all of the drinks and kids activities.”The town of Carbondale is a big player in all of the free music happening this summer, allocating seed money to allow local promoters to book bands and then go after business and individual sponsorships to help make the events successful. Sponsors are still needed for all summer music events.”This is really going to draw people to Carbondale. We’re using music and the arts as a magnet to bring people here to see what the town has to offer,” said Standiford, who will be hosting a whole lineup of local musicians at Steve’s Guitars.Town will be hopping all weekend with music at some new venues like The Village Smithy, Grana Bread, Peppino’s Pizza, Java Joes, GEO Store and Phat Thai. The Music and Lobster Fest starts at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 23, and runs through Saturday night. The deadline to buy tickets for fresh lobster is Friday. For tickets or more information, call (970) 704-4116. Tickets cost $30 for a lobster with sides and a drink of your choice.
