Pheil: Shaping the future of play

Erin Pheil
Special to the Daily

If you have a young child (age 6 or up) and you have an iPad 2 or iPad Mini, you owe it to yourself to check out http://PlayOsmo.com.

Osmo’s creators truly mean it when they say they’re shaping the future of play — and others are agreeing with them, with industry giants calling it “magical,” “beautifully designed,” and an awesome iPad experience that “even tech-wary parents will love.” In other words, this is another one of those innovations you run into that makes you think something along the lines of “Whoa, the future is already here” or “This is like being in the Jetsons.”

Why is it so amazing? Because Osmo allows your child to interact with real objects and real people while receiving real-time feedback and an incredible interactive experience via the iPad at the same time.

Osmo’s “reflector” snaps over your iPad’s camera and uses artificial intelligence that (again, in real time) responds to the actions your child is taking as they play games with real-life objects in front of the iPad — actions from arranging puzzle pieces to creating drawings to arranging letters to spell words.

In a matter of seconds the extremely short video animations you’ll see if you scroll down the homepage will do a much better job of painting a picture of what Osmo is than I’ve done here.

And just as a quick heads up, Osmo is not available for purchase yet, but the company is accepting pre-orders.

1. http://tinyurl.com/bskznul – Fan of QR codes? Skeptic of QR codes? This article’s author claims QR codes are dead/dying and being replaced by easier to use apps. An interesting article, but an even more interesting and lively debate below the article (currently at 54 comments, with the most recent one posted in March 2014, despite the article written a year prior).

2. http://tinyurl.com/m8t74br – This interesting infographic takes technology research and creates a fascinating picture of what cities of the future might look like if the trends of today become the mainstays of tomorrow. Some of the developments are ones you might expect, such as 3-D printers and drone delivery services, but there are definitely other ones included that are sure to surprise you.

3. http://tinyurl.com/lwhm2vf – Recruiting and hiring are two of the most important (and, from my personal experience, I’d say challenging) processes required when it comes to building a business. Unfortunately, for many, navigating the Web for advice on how to efficiently, effectively, strategically and successfully do both is a frustrating and unfruitful process. I’ve done some digging, and am happy to share this video with you. The video panel, put together by Inc. magazine, presents helpful solutions on recruiting and hiring offered by three experts working in different size companies, from a six-person operation to an organization with over 100,000 employees.
