Nancy Cook: Appreciated 9/11 commentary

Nancy CookFrisco

I am writing to say how much I appreciated both columns on Sunday’s SDN (9/11/11) opinion page.

In their adjacent pieces on that page, Alex Miller and Lawrence Wright (“2 questions at the heart of bin Laden’s jihad”) both made some very intelligent remarks about so much of what swirled around the horrific events on that date 10 years ago.

Their comments on the dynamics driving the perpetration of such violence, and many of the reactions, judgments and responses in the aftermath both immediate and long term, were, for me full of some new deeper insights I had failed to focus fully on – especially bin Laden’s intent with his attack(s) to cripple the U.S. economically by opening, as Wright describes, a “gushing financial wound” by luring us into battle in Afghanistan, and even further – as Wright goes on to explain. That’s only one example of a number of truly fine insights, such as the courage and sacrifice of so many Muslims who are suffering at the hands of their own countrymen in their current pursuit of democracy and justice (Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen). Fascinating, thought provoking reads on a day when we all need to be thinking about new ways of moving forward globally to create a just society for everyone. If you missed these pieces in Sunday’s paper, it’s worth going online, or stopping by the Frisco office for a copy to read.
