Nancy Hallett: Supports DVE dual-language

Why not learn another language or two in school? Music is a great tool as well as Spanish. Some 1.2 billion people speak Chinese, 480 million speak English and 332 million speak Spanish globally. German is #10 and French is #14. Spanish or Chinese is the obvious choice and the demographics in Summit County support the DVE decision hands down.

Specifically to Janet Harriman Bierbaum, I have friends who actually CHOOSE to drive their children to DVE from Breckenridge and Silverthorne, people who run the Keystone Science School and The Keystone Culinary program, their experience teaching kids and young adults also supports the success of the school system. When your children enter the middle school, be ready for them to be exposed to a cultural competency program which will include Spanish culture.

In addition to your comment on hiring a tutor, good for you. Have you also considered that others in this community cannot afford this choice? As far as exposing them to cultures all over the world, why not consider taking them to Spain or Peru for the incredible art, architecture and culture from famous people such as Picasso? Or try Cuba – the music I was able to play there along with the well-educated citizens was an experience I will never forget.

By only seeing the decision of the school system as an affront to your opinions as opposed to a conscious choice that, globally we are all brothers and sisters, it is what we are being, what we are making that creates what we have in this world. This may be a disservice to your kids. I consciously choose to be open to the investment of our kids future and welcome the contrast from racist snobs.
