The National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) salutes Hollywood with its Pops! “Music from the Movies” concert on Friday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. From “Star Wars” to “The Godfather,” there is a little something for everyone. Featuring violinist Steven Greenman, NRO violinist and vocalist Joshua Huang, and maestro Carl Topilow on clarinet, this concert will offer a selection of film favorites.
Violinist Steven Greenman will join the NRO to perform “Excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof.” Described by the Washington Post as “particularly impressive,” Greenman travels the world as a scholar, teaching-artist and soloist. He is internationally renowned for his performances and compositions of East European Jewish klezmer and Romani (Gypsy) music, in addition to appearances as a classical soloist.
The first half of the program kicks off with a medley of tunes from the stage and screen. “A Hollywood Salute” opens with the Warner Brothers theme and transitions seamlessly from “Jaws” to “Indiana Jones” and many more. This piece pays homage to years of great film scoring.
Keeping with the spirit of the evening, the NRO will perform an easily-recognizable piece. Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walküre” may conjure up memories of Bugs Bunny cartoons and Elmer Fudd’s exclamations, “Kill the wabbit!”
“An American in Paris,” a quirky portrayal of an American tourist visiting Paris by George Gershwin and “Excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof” featuring violin virtuoso Steven Greenman will conclude the first part of Friday’s exciting program.
Following Intermission the NRO will perform John Williams’s wicked work, “Devil’s Dance from the Witches of Eastwick.” Taken from the 1987 movie and book, this piece tells the story of three witches who encounter a cunning, sinister stranger with a penchant for evil. As the devilish character corrupts each of the women, their powers begin to spiral out of control. The witches must find a way to exile the seductive stranger from their lives in this spellbinding work.
Conductor Topilow trades in his baton for a clarinet in Nino Rota’s “Theme from the Godfather.” The orchestra, featuring the maestro on clarinet, will present a moving rendition of themes from this legendary film.
Many orchestra members possess talents aside from their instruments. Violinist and vocalist Joshua Huang has been featured on Season 3 of NBC’s “The Sing Off” with his a cappella group “The Yellowjackets.” He will be performing selections from the 1952 American Western film “High Noon.”
Friday evening’s concert will conclude one of John Williams’ best known film scores, “Star Wars Suite: The Force Awakens.”
Sponsors for this concert are Patrice & Ron Lara, Downstairs at Eric’s, Mike Altenberg & Libby Bortz, and M.A. Deen.
Tickets for this concert range from $25-40 and are $7 for audience members ages 18 and under. Tickets may be purchased at the Riverwalk Center Box Office, 150 W. Adams Ave., Breckenridge, by phone at (970) 547-3100, or online at nromusic.com.
