National Weather Service issues winter storm watch for areas in Summit County including Breckenridge

Winter storm watch, which begins Sunday afternoon, projects up to 2 feet of snow at higher elevations

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for areas in Summit County above 9,000 feet in elevation including Breckenridge. The storm watch is set to be in effect from “Sunday afternoon through late Monday night,” according to the advisory. The winter storm watch was issued on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The advisory states that heavy snow is possible in the specified regions, with accumulations from 8-16 inches and some localized areas receiving up to 2 feet of snow. Wind gusts could reach as high as 50 mph.

Snow- and ice-covered roads are expected to make travel hazardous, the advisory states, and travelers should allow extra time to reach their destinations.

A National Weather Service winter weather advisory is also set to remain in effect in Summit County until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Traffic issues have been present throughout the long Presidents Day weekend in Summit County, including a closure of U.S. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass that began after an avalanche swept over the highway Friday night. The closure continued throughout Saturday as crews worked to clean up debris and complete maintenance operations.
