Need only one principal at SHS

Pauline Child

This letter originally was sent to Superintendent Wes Smith and the Summit School Board.

Our children have been enrolled in the Summit School District for 14 years. As a result of re-districting, we have experienced Frisco, Silverthorne and Dillon Valley Elementary and were well pleased with the level of education and care at all three schools. Summit Middle School has also proved to be a quality school. Mark Clark has been instrumental in creating a positive learning environment in which both staff and students feel empowered and listened to.

Aside from the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Program as an exclusive model in contrast to the inclusive version we were promised, I am very pleased with SMS. Unfortunately, this positive learning environment stops at Summit High School. I have the utmost respect for many of the teachers there and have heard far too often that SHS is in desperate need of an experienced high school principal. Frank Mencin and Peggy Kastberg are fine, hardworking people. Frank was principal of Frisco Elementary when our children attended there and was loved by the community. Our children also attended SMS when Peggy served as dean of students and she did a most commendable job. Their co-principalship at he high school, however, is not working. Summit School District would be better served if they were returned to the positions in which they attained such a high degree of achievement and a new principal were hired to run the high school. As the student body continues to expand and grow, surely our high school deserves an experienced principal who can lead SHS to the same level of success as our other schools.
