New caucus to promote snowsports

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Mark Udall, D-Boulder, and John Sweeney, R-N.Y., are forming a ski and snowboard caucus to promote the two sports and address issues that affect the ski and snowboard communities.

Issues will include public lands management, affordable housing, transportation, wildlife and the promotion of physical activity to improve health.

“The outdoor recreation economy is crucial to our state,” said Lawrence Pacheco, press secretary for Udall’s office. “(Congressman Udall) is forming this caucus with Congressman Sweeny to draw some attention to the issues that are important to the ski industry and also use it as an opportunity to talk about the benefits of winter sports.”

Udall and Sweeney will make a formal announcement about the caucus today in Washington, D.C.

National Ski Areas Association representatives will also speak, and Snow-Sports Industries America will promote a “Winter Feels Good” public awareness campaign targeted at children 14 years old and younger. The program promotes health, fitness and the social aspects of participating in snow sports.

Olympic medalists Shannon Bahrke of the U.S. Ski Team and former ski team member Dianne Roffe will also be in attendance.
