New Colorado skier license plate not ready yet

Summit Daily/Bob BerwynOfficials say the new Colorado skier license plate is still being 'tested' and may be ready by next January.

SUMMIT COUNTY – Anyone eagerly awaiting a chance to score a new Colorado skier license plate will have to wait a little longer.

The new plates are still being tested for technical specifications, said Jen Rudolph, spokeswoman for Colorado Ski Country USA.

“We’re still hoping they’ll be available by the start of the ski season,” Rudolph said. “Part of the process is, the plates have to meet specific requirements,” she added, saying they have to be legible from a certain distance.

Initially, the word was that the plates could be ordered starting July 1, but clerks at the local branch of the Division of Motor Vehicles said they expect the plates won’t be available Jan. 1, and they aren’t taking orders just yet.

Rudolph said the exact timing is in the hands of the state’s motor vehicle bureaucracy.

Gov. Bill Ritter signed the law authorizing the new plates during a ceremony at Arapahoe Basin earlier this year.

Colorado Ski Country USA director Melanie Mills said the new plates could generate tens of thousands of dollars the first few years. The money goes to the highway trust fund, and the Colorado Transportation Commission allocates the money. Some of it could theoretically help fund things like more snowplows for I-70, Mills said.

The plates cost $50. Mills said the public has been asking for them for decades. The new logo will give Colorado’s 500,000 active skiers and riders the chance to “fly the flag,” Mills said.
