NFL Alumni to include Watson/ McCaffrey golf tourney in tour

BRECKENRIDGE – The Steve Watson/Ed McCaffrey Golf Classic now will be part of the NFL Alumni Charity Golf Classic Tour after the two Denver Broncos greats announced time constraints have forced them to end their participation with the 15-year event.

The 23-year-old NFL golf tour consists of one-day, 18-hole scramble tournaments from January through November each year. The tourneys are played at courses across the country, teaming amateur golfers with celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment. Winning teams from each tournament compete in the Super Bowl of Golf in the spring.

The tournament is set to take place June 13 to 16 at the Breckenridge Golf Club and the Raven at Three Peaks course in Silverthorne.

“They approached us with the idea because they didn’t want to see this tournament end,” said tournament director Karen Horsch.

“It’s very exciting, because it ensures the continuation of a longstanding tradition and the donation of funding to charities such as the Ronald McDonald House in Denver and The Summit Foundation.”

Since its inception, the golf tournament has grown from a one-day, one-course event that brought in almost $11,000, to a two-day, two-course competition that raised more than $140,000 in 2001. The 14-year total is nearly $1 million.

This year’s event kicks off with a welcome party at the Breckenridge RiverWalk on Thursday, and play will be June 14 and 15, with teams alternating between the Breckenridge and Raven courses.

Format is a five-some scramble with a shotgun start. Play begins at 10 a.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. The grand prize for this final Watson McCaffrey tournament is six three-night stays at one of 11 Vail Resorts’ Rockresorts in the United States.
