Nick Thomas: Free speech cuts both ways

Perhaps some of the outrage and disrespect coming from the left on the Dan Cathy/Chick-fil-A issue stems from the actual quote that Mr. Cathy gave on the topic of gay marriage. As a refresher, here is the direct statement he gave in an interview when asked about his opinion on gay marriage:”I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is about.”This is not simply expressing support for “traditional marriage” and leaving it at that. To suggest that when two consenting adults want to enter into a monogamous marriage because they love each other is somehow “shaking a fist” at God is more than a bit insulting and harshly judgmental. It is not tolerant, respectful, nor the basis of a meaningful discussion on the topic. The left has simply responded in kind to a statement meant to push buttons. I think it is ridiculous and virtually criminal that politicians on the left (the mayors of Boston and Chicago in particular) are going to try to restrict the growth of Chick-fil-A in their cities because of this quote – that is in serious conflict with the First Amendment, and should be fought against vigorously on the grounds of free speech. But the political left is free to respond however they feel appropriate to a condescending and, yes, intolerant statement made by an influential businessman. That is also what free speech is all about.
