No injuries reported after light-rail train derails in Littleton

LITTLETON ” No injuries are reported after an RTD light-rail passenger train collided with a coal train early Tuesday in Littleton, and ended up jumping the tracks itself.

Regional Transportation District spokeswoman Darnia Serna says the “C” and “D” lines are affected after the freight train toppled over onto the light-rail tracks.

The derailment is expected to affect hundreds of riders who use the light-rail system, and motorists driving in the area of the accident near Sante Fe and the light-rail’s Mineral station.

Light-rail passenger Jonathan Ashford says the driver of his train saw the toppled coal cars and tried to stop the light-rail train, but could not avoid the accident.

RTD is transporting passengers by bus in order to bypass the crash.
